Consumers see it and producers know it. Prices have no support at their current levels. China's major stainless steelmakers Taigang and Baosteel Stainless have cut prices for September delivery by up to 4%. Moreover, China is failing to sell to high export volumes, despite favourable curency movements. Exports of stainless steel flat products fell 23% month-on-month in July, as shipments to South Korea and Taiwan declined. Elsewhere in Japan, the strong yen is deterring exports and encouraging imports. Domestic prices have thus tumbled and are set for further downside as the country faces overcapacity and a slow-down in the Chinese economy. In South Korea, POSCO has reached out to try and support prices by planning to reduce production of CR stainless steel. Although this is only likely to pay lip service, due to continuous weak demand and falling input costs. For the region overall prices are expected to slide further in the short-term. Stimulous measures may help, but don't appearforthcoming and over-supply issues will have to be resolved before these could start to affect prices.
