摘要

Abstract The selection of bearings for a bridge is crucial from a design point of view for an engineer. In India, there are several bearing types available for bridge seismic protection. However, depending on the various seismic zones in India and the varying span length of the bridge, the selection of bearings for a bridge has not been well understood. A literature-based bridge was chosen for this investigation, and two different bearing types, such as elastomeric (flexible) bearings and friction-based (rigid) bearings, have been selected for investigation in the different seismic zones of India. Within the scope of this investigation, five distinct ground movements have been taken into consideration. The ground motion has been scaled using software and spectrally matched with India’s various seismic zones. An investigation of the nonlinear time history analysis was performed. The seismic reaction, as well as the efficacy of flexible and stiff bearings, have been determined. The average normalized response of the bridge has been determined to compare the efficacy of the bearings. The effect of span variation on the seismic response of bridges has also been investigated under seismic zone IV. It was observed that the rigid bearings can be preferred in severe seismic zones. However, flexible bearings may be used for the lower seismic zones (zone II and zone III). It has also been observed that the span length of a bridge significantly affects the response of the bridge.
