The development of the internal combustion engine has been a saga punctuated by thousands of small changes. If we could transport a mechanic from the 1920s, he would be familiar with the main theme of a modern engine. These small changes, though, have made a startling difference to the efficiency and reliability of the engine. And every now and again a development comes about that makes a truly remarkable change to the operation of the engine. Continuous Variable Valve Lift is one such development. Variable Valve Timing has been with us for some years now and its benefits are well understood, but true infinitely variable valve lift offers something different and has the potential for further improvements to the Otto Cycle.
