The final article in this series looks at the continuously variable transmission (CVT) and infinitely variable transmissions. Whereas the robotised gearbox (AMT) and the dual clutch transmission DCT/D5G can be described as relatively new technology, the continuously variable transmission has been around for over 100 years. In fact all but the electromagnetically controlled CVTs fitted to hybrid systems have their roots in early production cars. There has recently been a resurgence of CVTs to the point where they can found as an option from most manufacturers.
