As the new academic year opens, SME and the National Stone Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA), have begun the 7th Annual Student Design Competition. The competition is the mining industry's only academic competition of the year. The competition is a two-stage, team-based problem involving a technical design and an oral presentation. The first stage - technical design - takes place during the first semester of the school year on each team's campus. It is designed to simulate an engineering project prepared by an engineering group for a company.
