IN RESPONSE TO a rise in deaths at its mines, South Africa's department of mineral resources (DMR) will require boards of mining companies to submit reports on health and safety. The DMR said mineworker deaths have risen more than 25 percent in the first quarter of this year to 38, compared with the same period last year. The country's national union of mineworkers (NUM) said 50 miners have died on the job from January through the first two weeks of April, Reuters reported.
