WHEN SPIKE TV'S reality show "Coal" premiered on March 30, more than six million people tuned in. The ratings for the show that follows the coal miners at Cobalt Coal Corps.' underground coal mine in McDowell County, WV remained strong, with about one million people watching the following episodes. With the attention, Cobalt Coal Corp. has seen an increased interest in prospective employees. However, the camera crews also led to a fine from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, which spotted a safety violation in the show's first episode. A segment in the first episode depicted a worker using the wrong tool to pry a half-ton sheet of slate from the mine's ceiling. It was the first time MSHA had discovered a violation via TV footage, a spokeswoman told The Associated Press.
