Six companies mined fire clay in four states in 2009. Production, based on a preliminary survey of the fire clay industry, was estimated to be 325 kt (385,000 st) valued at 15.5 million dollars in 2009, a decrease from 447 kt (493,000 st), valued at 17.7 million dollars, in 2008. Missouri was the leading producing state followed by Ohio, California and South Carolina. A.P. Green Industries, a division of ANH Refractories Co., reopened a plant in Fulton, MO in late 2009 to meet the renewed demand for firebrick from customers that had exhausted their refractory inventories. The company indicated that the loss in demand from cement and steel plants seriously affected sales in 2009 and early 2010.
