Chemical Products produced strontium carbonate from imported celestite at is Cartersville, GA plant. This is the first time strontium carbonate has been produced in the United States since 1959. Celestite is an ore that consists primarily of strontium sulfate. Because one company produces strontium carbonate domestically, production figures are not published. However, consumption estimates can be made based on trade data from the US Bureau of the Census. Consumption is estimated to be about 35 kt (38,500 st) of strontium contained in celestite (43.8 percent strontium), strontium carbonate (59.3 percent strontium) and strontium nitrate (41.4 percent strontium). During 1994, about 36 kt (39,600 st) of celestite, containing 16 kt (17,600 st) strontium, were imported from Mexico.
