Fluorspar was not mined in the United States during 2004, although a small amount of usable synthetic fluorspar (CaF_2) was produced from industrial waste streams. The majority of fluorspar consumed in the United States came from imports or stockpiled material purchased from the National Defense Stockpile (NDS). In addition, consumption is supplemented by use of byproduct fluorosilicic acid produced at phosphoric acid plants. In 2004, annual production of fluorosilicic acid was 50 kt (55,000 st) or about 88 kt (97,000 st) of 92 percent fluorspar equivalent.
