China, Mexico, Spain and Turkey are the world's leading producers of celestite (strontium sulfate), the most common strontium mineral. Of an estimated 520 kt (573,000 st) of celestite produced worldwide in 2005, 98 percent was produced in those countries. Deposits of strontianite (strontium carbonate), another strontium mineral, have been identified in China and Malawi. But production of relatively small quantities has been reported only from China. Although celestite deposits occur in the United States, no domestic celestite has been mined since 1959. Little strontium is consumed directly as celestite. It is first converted to strontium carbonate through a chemical process. Strontium carbonate is used directly in some applications, such as television glass, and is also converted into the appropriate downstream chemicals for other end uses.
