In 1994, five US firms produced 42.2 kt (46,500 st) of crude garnet concentrate worth 5 million dollars, according to preliminary estimates by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). Those companies were Barton Mines, Warren County, NY; Nyco Division of Processed Minerals, Essex County, NY; International Garnet Abrasive, Clinton County, NY; Emerald Creek Garnet, Benewah County, ID and Patterson Materials, a subsidiary of Peckham Industries, that began production in 1994 at its plant in Wingdale, NY. In 1994, the preliminary estimate of the amount of garnet sold or used by producers was48.5 kt (53,500 st), valued at 14 million dollars (Table 1). Technical-grade industrial garnet from the United States is a solid solution of almandite and pyrope that, when under pressure, breaks into sharp chisel-edged plates. Before 1980, the major industrial use for high-quality, technical-grade, high-value garnet was as loose-grain abrasives for optical-lens grinding and plate-glass grinding. In recent years, its applications included the high-quality, scratch-free lapping of semiconductor materials and other metals. Finishing wood, leather, hard rubber, felt and plastics often requires garnet-coated abrasive papers and cloths.
