1994 was a banner year for natural zeolite production and sales in the United States. With the expansion of the processing facilities at St. Cloud Mining, natural zeolite production will exceed the estimated 42 to 44 kt (46,000 48,000 st) produced in 1993. More than 95 percent of the natural zeolites produced in the United States are clinoptilolite. The remainder is chabazite. The natural zeolite industry in the United States is going through a consolidation. The largest producers of clinoptilolite are St. Cloud Mining at Winston, NM, ZeoTech at Tilden, TX and Teague Mineral Products at Adrian, OR. Most of their production is consumed in animal absorbents, aquarium gravels, soil amendments and animal husbandry products. The largest producers of chabazite are UOP and GSA Resources. Both produce chabazite from their mines at Bowie, AZ. UOP periodically mines a small tonnage of mordenite from the Union Pass deposit near Kingman, AZ. GSA Resources and UOP produce specialty products used in radiation waste treatment, gas separation and desiccation. GSA Resources acquired the NRG property at Bowie in 1994.
