John Dixon Vincent died May 28, 1994 in Tucson, AZ after a lengthy illness. He was 84. Dick, as he was familiarly known, was an internationally recognized metallurgist in nonferrous mining. Dick Vincent was born Oct. 11, 1909, in Cortez, CO. He lived near Grand Junction until his family moved to Whittier, CA, where he attended high school. Vincent's original ambition was to be a doctor and follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, Cyrus Dixon. He decided, however, to return to Colorado for college and this step engendered an interest in mining. He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in mining engineering and earned the highest academic standing of any student up to that time. While a student, he grubstaked in the Rockies and remembered being thrown off Baby Doe Tabor's property by the rifle-brandishing recluse herself. Vincent began his career during the depression years of 1938-1939 as a hard rock and coal miner. He worked for the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. in Casapalca and Maher Tunnel, Peru and developed an abiding interest in the extraction of metals and in mineral dressing. In 1938, he received a MS in mineral dressing from the Montana School of Mines, where he was mentored by Antoine M. Gaudin.
