Salt continues to be the most effective material to prevent accidents and enhanced mobility on roads and highways during the snow season. It is also the most economical regenerant for water softeners, an essential ingredient in the production of food and the most reliable delivery mechanism for trace minerals in animal feeding. Traditionally, the world's largest salt producer, the U.S., was surpassed in 2007 by China. In 2009, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated total U.S. salt production (including brine directly captured for the chemical industry) at 46 Mt (51 million st).This is a drop of 3 percent, while China topped off at 60 Mt (66 million st). Combined, both countries produced about 41 percent of total world production.
