Before he became President Obama's Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar was a senator from Colorado, a state with a rich mining heritage and a major producer of coal. While in the Senate, Salazar would give the occasional speech to local mining and other extractive industry groups. And like any elected official, he would say the right things about his support of responsible mining and oil and gas extraction on public lands. For the most part — and there are some that will argue with me on this — he did. At the time, I thought he did a reasonably good job of representing the state. He had a good understanding of what the mining industry contributed to the state in terms of taxes, royalties and jobs.His support for the mining industry, however, changed after being appointed Secretary of the Interior. Four years ago, President Obama, when he was Candidate Obama, made it clear that cleaner energy sources were his priority and that he would make it as difficult as possible for coal to remain the leading source of energy in the United States. That goal has not changed in four years, especially given the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's penchant for writing regulations it has no authority to write.
