Salt helps prevent accidents and provides continued mobility on streets and highways during winter snow-storms. United States sales of deicing salt by Salt Institute member companies increased 15 percent to 16.4 Mt (18 million st) from 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st) in 1999. This was due largely to a severe winter in much of the North American snow belt. Highway agencies reported tight supplies in many areas.US Salt Institute members increased dry salt sales to 27.2 Mt (30 million st) from 25.6 Mt (28.2 million st) in 1999 (Table 1). Water conditioning, chemical and food-grade salt sales fell slightly from 1999 levels, while animal feed salt sales increased.
