Seawater and natural brines accounted for about 60 percent of US magnesium compounds production in 2001. Dead-burned and caustic-calcined magnesias were recovered from seawater in Florida by Premier Chemicals. They were also recovered from Michigan well brines by Dow Chemical, Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties and Rohm & Haas. And Premier Chemicals recovered dead-burned and caustic-calcined magnesias from magnesite in Nevada. Reilly Industries and Great Salt Lake Minerals recovered magnesium chloride brines from the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Applied Chemical Magnesias produced magnesium hydroxide from brucite in Texas. Barcroft produced it from seawater in Delaware. So did Premier Chemicals in Florida. In addition, Dow Chemical, Martin Marietta Magnesia and Rohm & Haas produced magnesium hydroxide from their operations in Michigan.
