U.S. marketable phosphate rock production for the 2005 crop year (July 1,2004 to June 30,2005) decreased slightly to 35.8 Mt (39.4 million st) at 62.8 percent bone phosphate of lime (BPL) from the 2004 crop year of 36.1 Mt (39.8 million st) at 63.5 percent BPL, as reported to the U.S. Department of the Interior by the mining companies operating in the United States. Domestic consumption decreased slightly in the 2005 crop year to 38.8 Mt (42.7 million st) compared with the 39 Mt (43 million st) consumed in crop year 2004. Imports of rock remained constant resulting in a slight reduction in producers' stocks (Table 1). Florida and North Carolina accounted for about 85 percent of U.S. production. The balance was produced in Idaho and Utah. U.S. production of 38.3 Mt (42.2 million st) represented about 25.9 percent of the world production of 148 Mt (163 million st) in calendar year 2005.
