From 1996 to 2001, the gypsum industry has experienced several mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, announcements of construction of new plants and expansion of manufacturing capacity at existing plants. Several older, less efficient manufacturing facilities have been temporarily idled, closed or dismantled. Worldwide, the gypsum industry consists of a few large, vertically integrated companies. USG is the largest producer in the United States. The predominant producers in Europe and Asia are the Lafarge Group, BPB and Knauf. These companies operate many wallboard and plaster manufacturing facilities as joint ventures with smaller companies. Data sources for this industry summary includes the US Geological Survey, Gypsum Association, Eurogypsum and press releases from various gypsum producers.
