Annual job growth in mining increased 4.8 percent from December 2000 through December 2001, according to the Texas Labor Market Review. This was primarily because of an increase in oil and gas activity statewide. The nonfuel mineral industry of Texas saw only a slight increase in its growth rate during 2001. The Texas Workforce Commission said that the annual growth rate for construction jobs fell by 0.6 percent. Jobs related to stone, clay and glass products fell by 0.2 percent. And jobs related to concrete, gypsum and plaster products increased by 2.9 percent. The Shafter district, in Presidio County, produced 1.08 kt (35 million oz) of silver from 1883 to 1942. Subsequent exploration has defined a comparable silver resource in a downdip extension of the original ore zone. Silver principally occurs as oxidized mineralization controlled by tectonic and karst structures in Permian carbonates. Silver Standard Resources is permitting the Shafter project for silver production.
