Joy customers have asked for new technology that would improve entry-development rates. Joy is answering with concepts, designs and processes that not only provide for the operators health and protection but are capable of quantum leaps in advance rates and productivity. Historically, mine operators have done a remarkable job of assembling equipment from several manufacturers into a development-mining system. However, their success is limited by the disjointed nature of specialized equipment from several different sources. The Joy EDS project took the system concept back to the drawing board. However, nothing was drawn before operator health, protection and ergonomics were considered. Existing and proposed processes, equipment and ideas, with the potential for quantum leaps in advance rates and productivity, have been molded around these operator considerations to form the EDS concept. The IMM is the first major EDS component to be completed. As introduction of the IMM proceeds at the SUFCo Mine, conceptual development and analytical analysis of the second major component (haulage) will be near completion. The remaining critical components will be designed for integration with the new IMM and haulage concepts to form the complete Joy entry-development "SYSTEM."
