US ammonia production in 2001 declined by about 22 percent from 2000. And apparent consumption declined by about 12 percent. High natural gas prices that began near the end of 2000 continued in the first few months of 2001. This caused many plants to remain closed or significantly curtail production. The United States, however, remained the world's second largest ammonia producer and consumer, following China. In descending order of importance, urea, ammonium phosphates, ammonium nitrate, nitric acid and ammonium sulfate were the major derivatives of ammonia in the United States. About 89 percent of US apparent domestic ammonia consumption was for fertilizer use. This included anhydrous ammonia for direct application, urea, ammonium nitrates, ammonium phosphates and other nitrogen compounds. Ammonia was also used to produce plastics, synthetic fibers and resins, explosives and other chemical compounds.
