Industrial diamond was produced in 30 countries during 2001. About 70 percent of the global output was produced in Ireland, Japan, Russia and the United States. Some reports indicate that the United States is the world's leading producer. Others claim that Ireland is the leading source. During 2001, two US companies produced an estimated 408 million carats. One company was in New Jersey and the other was in Ohio. 2001 production was a record high for the fifth consecutive year. Also in 2001, nine US firms manufactured polycrystalline diamond (PCD) from synthetic diamond grit and powder. It is estimated that more than 10 million carats of used industrial diamond were recycled in the United States during 2001. Most of this material was recovered from used drill bits, diamond tools and other diamond-containing wastes. During 2001, diamond was also recovered from residues generated in the manufacture of PCD.
