Equipment suppliers come and go. It's tough to weather the storms of volatile metals prices and the fickle capital spending patterns that inevitably result. Nonetheless, there are a few suppliers who have stood the test of time. Ironically, one of these stalwarts with many well-known instrument brands is little known by the mineral and coal mining companies of today-at least not by its present name. The roots of Thermo Electron as a leading supplier of instrumentation to the mining industry extend back to the 1950's. Most longtime hard rock miners recognize Ramsey belt scales as a market leader, and most experienced coal miners feel the same about Texas Nuclear density gauges and Gamma-Metrics analyzers. But it wasn't until the early 1990's that these companies began to merge under a single ownership of Thermo Electron.
