The US Bureau of Mines estimated that from 1993 to 1994 domestic production of industrial sand and gravel increased 800 kt tons (880,000 st). In 1994, it was estimated that 27 Mt (29.7 million st) of industrial sand and gravel, valued at nearly 460 million dollars, were produced by 88 companies from 153 operations in 38 states. This is about a 3 percent production increase from 1993. This yielded an average unit price value of 16.92/t dollars(18.65/st dollars), down from 17.33/t dollars (19.10/st dollars) in 1993. Company officials verified that 1994 was a good production year. However, most mentioned that prices did not keep up with inflation. The top five producers of industrial sand and gravel continue to be Unimin, US Silica (a subsidiary of US Borax and Chemical), Fairmount Minerals (Wedron Silica, TechniSand and Best Sand), The Morie Co. (South Jersey Industries) and Oglebay Norton Co. (California Silica Products, Central Silica and Texas Mining Co.). In 1993, these companies operated 47 plants domestically. About 33 kt (36,300 st) of strontium carbonate (20 kt or 22,000 st strontium) were imported from several countries. More than 90 percent of all strontium imports were from Mexico. Strontium compound exports were low, totaling about 1.9 kt (2000 st) (1.1 kt or 1200 st strontium). US strontium imports and consumption increased about 30 percent in 1994. This was due to increased domestic production of color television picture tube glass.
