In 1994, nitrogen compounds supplies in the United States reached record highs due to strong domestic demand for agricultural and industrial products. The total US nitrogen compound f.o.b. Gulf of Mexico reached 5 billion dollars compared with 2.7 billion dollars in 1993, according to the US Department of Commerce and chemical trade journals. A unique combination of strong upward movement in the domestic nitrogen market led to several new records. These include nitrogen fertilizer consumption and agricultural exports. Record amounts of imported ammonia were required to meet heavy demand at home and abroad. Ammonium phosphate shipments to the People's Republic of China more than doubled to a record high of 4.9 Mt (5.4 million st), adding to the demand for ammonia. Improved performance by the industrial sector further contributed to tight supplies and upward price pressure (Table 1). Profitability was enhanced by reasonably priced natural gas feedstock for ammonia production, industry consolidation and a favorable balance between supply and demand in the global fertilizer and grain sectors.
