Metallic mining activity in Wisconsin saw very limited activity during 2001. For the third year in a row, there was no exploration or leasing activity in the state. However, significant milestones for the once controversial Flambeau Mine were reached. And the long-awaited Nicolet Mine progressed slowly in its regulatory review. The Flambeau Mine is a small, openpit, copper-gold operation that was active from 1993 to 1997. During 2001, it completed its active reclamation phase. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) agreed that the property was ready for a four-year period of less-active maintenance, continued monitoring and ongoing evaluation of the quality of the reclamation program. Should the mine's reclamation be considered complete and the site environmentally stable at the end of this period, Flambeau Mining will have the opportunity to reduce the reclamation bond. The mine site would also be declared closed and long-term care would be placed into effect. The Flambeau deposit, discovered in 1968, produced more than 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st) of high-grade copper ore during its four years of operation.
