The perlite industry in the United States continued to undergo rapid change and increased competition in 2005 as it did in 2004. World Minerals acquired Basin Perlite and itself was acquired by Imerys. Due diligence was performed on other operations in late 2005 as well. U.S. production of perlite in 2005 was 506 kt (558,000 st), which remained steady after four consecutive years of decline (Table 1). Perlite imports to the Eastern and Gulf coasts of the United States from Greece by S&B declined about 18 percent to 196 kt (216,000 st) from 238 kt (262,000 st) in 2004. This market remains well protected by high rail rates from western U.S. perlite plants. Minor imports of perlite by Termolita from Mexico continued. Perlite is exported to Canada and to the Pacific Rim, partially offsetting imports. Since 2000, domestic apparent consumption has dropped about 18 percent. This was mainly due to lower demand for perlite used in construction-related materials.
