Acid rock drainage (ARD), one of mining's most significant and potentially long-term environmental problems, is caused when sulfide-bearing rock is exposed to oxygen and water. ARD can occur during earths-moving activities such as mining, road building or construction and can result in adverse water quality impacts. ARD has been a problem for a long time (see the photo at right). Fortunately, technologies are now available to prevent and mitigate ARD formation. The GARD Guide brings these techniques together in a comprehensive, easily accessible format. In the June 2008 issue of Mining Engineering, the Environmental Division announced that the Global Acid Rock Drainage (GARD) Guide was being developed by the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) to address this problem. INAP members include Anglo American, Barrick Gold, BHP Billiton, Freeport-McMoRan, Kinross Gold, Newmont Mining, Rio Tinto, Vale Inco and Xstrata. With the support of the Global Alliance, INAP began developing the GARD Guide in late 2006.
