SME's Pittsburgh Section cohosted the Longwall USA awards luncheon on June 17, 2009. The luncheon was held in conjunction with the 2009 Long-wall USA conference held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA. The event attracted more than 100 mining industry professionals and students, as well as members from mining regulatory and research agencies and academia. The keynote presentation was given by SME member Kurt Kost, president, chief operating officer and chief executive officer of Foundation Coal Holdings, the nation's fourth largest coal company based on tons produced. His presentation, Climate Change: Engaging for a Positive Influence, discussed potential mining industry options for responding to climate change initiatives.
