The global financial crisis that has led to a slowdown by steelmakers has also prompted Rio Tinto and Peabody Energy to reduce their coal output. Peabody Energy, an American-based company, announced that its production in Wyoming's Powder River Basin would be cut by about 5 percent, or 9.1 Mt (10 million st). Peabody now expects to produce 172 to 177 Mt (190 million to 195 million st) from its Powder River Basin mines in 2009, down from more than 181 Mt (200 million st) last year. The company also announced that its Australian coal production was expected to be cut by as much as 2 Mt (2.2 million st).
