摘要

Salt continues to be the most effective material to prevent accidents and enhance mobility on roads and highways during the snow season. It is also a critical component for water conditioning and in the production of food and animal feed products. Traditionally the world's largest salt producer, the U.S. was surpassed in 2007 by China. In 2008, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the total U.S. salt production (including brine directly captured for the chemical industry) at 46 Mt (51 million st), while China topped off at 60 Mt (66 million st) (Table 1). Combined, both countries produced about 41 percent of total world salt production. Production and sales of salt in the U.S. differ sharply from year to year, the variations being due almost entirely to fluctuations in the weather, since the primary market for nonbrine salt is for highway deicing. Other markets are very stable and consistent. The salt industry produces mostly dry salt, since U.S. chemical companies generally operate their own captive solution mining brine wells.
