Young mining engineers should aspire to become licensed professional engineers, and the mining industry should support those individuals. The myriad of regulations applicable to the mining industry is creating a need for engineers in the mining industry to be licensed. Mine planning and permitting processes, mine property financial evaluations and mining construction projects are just some of the areas in which maintaining a professional engineer on staff is a benefit to a mining company. To the individual engineer, there are many benefits to becoming a professional engineer. Some of these include having greater credibility or prestige, greater authority, expanded career opportunities and, in many cases, greater income. Additionally, one cannot provide engineering services to the public or use the title professional engineer unless one is a licensed professional engineer (PE).
