The 2009 SME Annual Meeting was the scene of another successful SME/NSSGA Student Design Competition due to the continued enthusiasm and hard work from the participating schools. This year, 10 teams from six schools participated in the competition. The Student Design Committee has received much positive feedback from the faculty and students, which will make next year even better. Alex Duerksen, a student on Virginia Tech's Old Dominion Crushing team, had some great things to say about the competition, "The design competition has been one of my favorite parts of my mining engineering education. The process was very arduous and intense but winning a national engineering competition made up for the exhaustion. I learned a tremendous amount, not only about designing a mine, but about working as a team, maximizing group strengths and communicating in a professional setting."
