Domestic production of industrial sand and gravel in 2008 was about 30 Mt (33 million st), unchanged from that of 2007. U.S. apparent consumption was 27.5 Mt (30.3 million st) in 2008, unchanged from that of the previous year and imports increased slightly to 516 kt (568,000 st) in 2008. Imports of silica are generally of two types: small-quantity shipments of very-high-purity silica, or a few large shipments of lower-grade silica that were shipped only under special circumstances (such as very low freight rates). Some examples of end uses for industrial sand and gravel include abrasives, filtration, foundry, glassmaking, hydraulic fracturing and silicon metal applications.
