Cominco Resources International said that Minera Maria SA de CV has authorized the construction of the Mariquita copper project, located near Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. The operation will be an open-pit, heap-leach,solvent-extraction/electrowinning operation. Cathode copper production is expected to begin in 1996 at a rate of 15 kt/a (16,500 stpy). Minera Maria is 49 percent owned by Cominco and 51 percent owned by Empiesas Frisco. Separately, Cominco Resources International said that its 50 percent-owned Glenbrook nickel smelter near Riddle, OR will reopen in the second quarter of this year. The first shipment of ore from New Caledonia was expected to have arrived at the plant in March. Cominco estimated that it will need US 15 dollars million to fund its part of the working capital buildup and some minor capital expenditures. Glenbrook is the United States' lone nickel smelter. It is a joint venture with a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco Ltd.
