The mica group represents 34 different phyllosilicate minerals that exhibit a layered or platy structure. Com-mercially important mica minerals are muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite is the principal mica used. It is more abundant and has a white color and better electri-cal properties. Phlogopite is more temperature stable. It is used in applications where a combination of high heat stability and electrical properties is required.The uses of mica are divided into two sectors - scrap and flake, and sheet. Scrap and flake is the larger sector. U.S. consumption of scrap and flake during 2006 was 148 kt/a (163,000 stpy). It sold for between 162 dollars and 784/t dolllars (147 dollars and 711/st dollars).Sheet mica comprises block and splittings. U.S. con-sumption during 2006 was 380 t (419 st). These products had a higher unit value of between 1.53 dollars to 130/kg dollars (70 cents to 59/lb dollars ). They were mainly used to produce insu-lation for electrical motors. Consumption has decreased from 1.76 kt (1,939 st) in 2004, due to the loss of the elec-trical motor manufacturing sector to Asia.Most sheet products used in North America are im-ported; 24 percent from India, 21 percent from Belgium, 15 percent from China and 13 percent from Brazil. A small amount of sheet scrap is produced from pegmatite mining.
