The Mineral Industry Research Organisation (MIRO) has facilitated and managed collaborative research and development programmes for the minerals and related sectors for over thirty years. While minerals sector research interests were dominated by priorities of the metal mining and industrial mineral companies, in recent years the UK aggregate industries have taken a leading role in defining and responding to emerging technological issues. Over the same period there has been a trend away from operational and process efficiency based R&D towards projects and programmes that are driven by environmental issues and the need to operate in a new regulatory climate. The development of environmental policy and legislation at a European level has been particularly influential. Directives related to mineral waste, water management, atmospheric emissions and energy efficiency are to be followed by those related to vibration, environmental liability and others. Collaborative, pre-competitive research and development programmes have proven to be an effective means of addressing environmental issues that are common to many organisations and for which there are no commercial sensitivities. A willingness to participate in activities aimed at helping organisations meet their operational and environmental objectives has ensured that mineral operators, regulatory authorities and research providers have been able to form effective research consortia and promote development of technological solutions for the benefit of all.
