In March Cornwall CC approved proposed extraction of china clay, partial backfilling with china clay waste with restoration to a water storage reservoir, at Higher Moor, Cocksbarrow, St Austell by Imerys Minerals Ltd. The application, although not considered to be EIA development, contained detailed planning assessments in respect of landscape and visual issues, ecology, noise, dust and blasting, hydrology, hydrogeology and archaeology. During 2003 Imerys Minerals Ltd excavated ground at Higher Moor within the Gunheath Operational Area, in order to create a new water storage facility. The clay recovered from the excavation was of good quality and formed part of a proven larger deposit extending northwards towards Hensbarrow Downs; the company wished to exploit this clay resource.
