Extraction of sand and gravel and removal of surplus topsoil with restoration to a landscaped lake for nature conservation at Drayton (South) Chichester, by Tarmac Ltd was recommended to be approved by West Sussex CC in April. The site was identified in the West Sussex Minerals Local Plan, Deposit Plan 2000, as suitable for gravel working and the inclusion of the site was supported by the Inspector reporting following the Public Inquiry. The application site comprised 17.07ha of agricultural land and part of an unused former route of the A259 road south east of Chichester at Drayton. The proposal was to extract 413,800t of saleable (post processing) sand and gravel and 50,000t of saleable topsoil from 11.99ha of the application site. The operations would be conducted over a three to four year period in three phases. The application was accompanied by an Environmental Statement.
