It is a sobering reality that every year there are one or two significant tailings dam failures worldwide. In many cases these have been attributed to poor water management, design or construction. Extreme natural events related to 'unpredictable' climate and geology, such as floods and earthquakes, add to the complexity of these failures.The financial liability can be huge. Recent direct physical costs have been anything from $30m to $100m, while environmental liabilities and clean-up costs can run into hundreds of millions. On top of this are financial liabilities including loss of productivity and shareholder value.
