In December the North York Moors National Park Authority considered a request from Cleveland Potash Ltd to extract minerals from 3 ore bodies within 1.5km of the coastline from the Boulby mine. In 1998 planning permission was issued with a S106 Agreement for retention of the existing potash and salt mine at Boulby together with an extension of the area of extraction (see Mineral Planning 71 p.39). This consent included a condition which required approval prior to any mining or underground development taking place within 1.5km of high water mark, so as to review effects on the stability and levels of the coastline.
