In January the Environment Agency was to prosecute Harley ford Aggregates Ltd in connection with a gravel washing facility at South Harefield, Uxbridge, when a quantity of red diesel was found in Moorhall Lake adjacent to the facility and a site of special scientific interest.Ward Brothers Mining Ltd was fined 15,000 pounds and ordered to pay 11,267 pounds costs at Neath Magistrates Court in December after pleading guilty to polluting the Afon Dulais and its tributaries with silt. The company operates the Elwyn opencast mining complex at Onllwyn, near Neath, and admitted allowing polluting matter to enter the water courses on two occasions, contrary to S85(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991 and for exceeding the discharge consent on one occasion contrary to S85(6). At the opencast site thick slurry was flowing from a site road into a watercourse; settlement lagoons had been unable to cope. Water had also been pumped from a settlement lagoon into a watercourse.
