Flintshire County Council has approved a retrospective application for a ready mixed concrete batching plant and ancillary facilities to supply substantial volumes of concrete to the ongoing redevelopment works being undertaken at the prestigious Airbus Aircraft Factory, Broughton. The site comprised 0.42ha vacant land within an industrial estate situated 2km east of the factory. The contract required supply from a dedicated source and there were no suitable alternative sites near the end user. The plant was of an open modular design comprising three 15m high cement silos, mixing tank and loading shovel, water tank, conveyors and a Portakabin, in total taking up a floor area of 33m by 11m. An open storage area for aggregates was located to the south of the site. There was significant public opposition but the council thought that noise and dust impact could be regulated by condition and that highway and visual impact would not be detrimental.lt took account of the fact that the development would have a limited duration until the end of 2009 and also the economic importance of the Airbus development to the North Wales and North West region.
