With ominous warnings that a major earthquake will hit the San Francisco Bay area in the next 30 years, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (PUC) plans to act. Bids for a 3.2-km- (5-mile-) long tunnel under the bay were advertised on July 31. The tunnel is expected to include 2.7-m- (9-ft-) high steel pipe in a 4-m- (14-ft-) high corridor and will be run as deep as 31 m (103 ft) below the bay floor, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
