In June UK Coal plc announced the sale of its wholly owned subsidiary, Monckton Coke & Chemical Co Ltd to Hargreaves (UK) Ltd for 12M pounds. UK Coal expected to realise a profit on disposal of ?0.4M. As part of the agreement, UK Coal also entered into a long-term contract to supply coal at market prices to Monckton for the production of coke. The coal will be supplied from Maltby Colliery. Monckton manufactures around 200,000tpa of high quality coke and associated by-products from its facility at Royston, South Yorkshire. Also in June, following press speculation, UK Coal plc reacted to a possible offer for the company; discussions had been terminated. A revised restoration scheme by UK Coal Mining Ltd at the former Gedling Colliery Spoil Tip, Gedling, was considered by Nottinghamshire CC in April. The key issues were landscape impacts and the future use of the former spoil tip.
