An application by Deme Building Materials Ltd to extract marine sand and gravel from Area 478 in the Eastern English Channel was given a favourable Government View (Ref: M14/-/2/85). The application was made on 13 March 2002 applying for a Government View (GV) on a proposal for the extraction of 45Mt of sand and gravel deposits from Areas 478 and 479 over a 15 year period at a rate of 3Mtpa. These Areas are located some 35km and 20km respectively to the south of Beachy Head, East Sussex. Together, both Areas cover 34.8sq.km. At the time the application was made, Deme Building Materials Ltd was known as Dredging International (UK) Ltd. An Environmental Statement (ES) was produced in March 2003 to accompany the proposal. During the course of the consultation under the GV procedures, subsequent amendments were made. It was proposed that dredging should only take place in Area 478 and that the amount to be extracted during the first 5 years from this Area be reduced to no more than 3.44Mt, instead of 15Mt (i.e. 3Mt for each of the first 5 years); giving a maximum total of 33.44Mt of marine aggregate proposed to be extracted over 15 years. The total area was reduced to about 29.8sq.km.
