In May Dorset CC considered, in accordance with the Habitats Regulations 1994, the review of planning permissions for the excavation of sand and gravel at Masters South Pit and Masters North Pit, East Stoke near Wareham. The Authority determined that there were, in the terms of Regulation 49 of the Habitats Regulations, 'alternative solutions' to the winning and working of sand and gravel within those parts of Masters South Pit and Masters North Pit where the development would affect the integrity of European and Rarnsar sites; and that orders be made to modify planning permissions so as to prevent adverse impacts on the integrity of the Dorset Heathlands Special Protection Area and Ramsar site and the Dorset Heaths Special Area of Conservation.
