Virotec International Ltd reports that its Basecon~(TM) technology has been successful in tests to neutralize red mud produced at alumina refineries in Europe and North America. According to Virotec, the washing process that is used at alumina refineries to recover caustic aluminate from red-mud residues is inefficient and, as a result, the pH of such muds is typically over 13 and sometimes can reach 13.5. Th resulting residue is stored in lagoons.
